Knowledge is Empowering: Understanding the Jewish-Cancer Connection Webinar

Wednesday, August 26, 2020 6 Elul 5780

6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Beth Jacob Synagogue in partnership with Jewish Communities of Vermont will host a Oneinforty webinar to educate the community about Ashkenazi Jews' one-in-forty risk of inheriting a BRCA gene mutation.

Having a BRCA gene mutation significantly increases one's risk of developing breast, ovarian, prostate and other cancers that, in many cases, can be prevented or detected early. Panelists will discuss genetic counseling, the rationale for testing for BRCA gene mutations, managing cancer risk and resources available for those who carry BRCA gene mutations. Individuals who have a BRCA gene mutation will share their stories followed by a Q&A session.  Panelists will include Dr. Marie Wood, a cancer oncologist from UVM medical center and Wendy McKinnon, a genetic counselor from UVM Medical center.
